FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) |
|
How do I enroll my pet? Complete and submit the registration form for each dog or puppy you are enrolling. Payment guarantees a space in class. You can mail a tuition check to the PO Box above or use PayPal for Visa, Mastercard and American Express. If payment is not received before the first session, you will not be guaranteed a space in the class. If you have any questions, please contact us for futher information. What age should I start training a puppy? As soon as you bring your pet home, but no earlier than 8 weeks. However, your puppy must have 2 sets of vaccinations before attending group class. Why not get off to a good start and let your pet know your expectations from the beginning. K-9 Manners classes are 6 weeks in length. Both puppies and dogs attend all six sessions.Once your pet completes the group class you may want to consider enrolling in the Canine Good Citizen™ certification course. What kind of training methods are used? We use positive reinforcement training in all classes. We start off by rewarding the dog for associating the appropriate action with a word command -- not by punishing the dog. With increased communication and humane leadership techniques, the relationship between the dog and the owner strengthens. We don't use fear, intimidation or inhumane physical force methods because these methods may cause aggression and the relationship between the dog and owner to break down. While we do use toys and treats, we also teach you how to wean the dog off of receiving treats for every behavior. We can also adopt a "Nothing In Life Is Free" philosophy that lets the dog understand that it can earn its rewards in life by performing the appropriate behaviors and commands. We discuss techniques used to deter negative behaviors (jumping, digging, nipping, etc). What are the benefits of private lessons versus group lessons?Private Lessons-You will receive customized training based specifically for your and your dogs needs. You have the convenience of scheduling appointments around your activities. We can meet anywhere (your home, the park, ect). Higher rate of success from private instruction.Group lessons- Are set at the same time every week. The instructor is dividing his/her time between you and the rest of the class. Benefits are the social interaction your puppy or dog will get from this class with both people and other dogs/puppies. How many times a week does each class meet?K-9 Manners classes meet once a week for six weeks at the same day and time each week. Puppies and dogs must attend the first session (owner orientation). Private In-Home lessons meet based on your schedule and needs. How long is each class? Typically group classes are an hour in length. Group lessons can at times run a few minutes over, especially at orientation. Private lessons can also vary. If the dog becomes tired or frustrated, we will end the lesson, provide beneficial play time activities and reinforce the dogs self confidence. This is very important in building a lasting relationship. We don't want the dog to become mentally burned out. What is the average number of dogs in a class? Most group classes have between five and twelve students. Maximum class size is limited to twelve students to ensure individual attention during class. What should I bring to group training classes? There are a few basic items required for each class: collar w/ID tag, 6' & 20' leash, belt bag or fanny pack, 2-3 different types of treats as rewards, water bowl. Water is essential if classes are being held outdoors. The park has water spickets nearby so just bring a bowl. Nylon or cotton leashes are required. Harnesses, rectractable and chain leashes are NOT acceptable. The first class is owner orientation. We require clients bring their pets to orientation. This is when paperwork is handled, dog learning theory is discussed, rules and safety guidelines are provided. We must have a copy of your pet's vaccinations brought to the first class. We will have a Q & A session to answer any concerns prior to the first lesson and at the beginning and end of each lesson. Feed only 1/2 your dogs meal prior to class. This will help keep him interested in the reward treats when learning commands and focus on the training without adding calories. How much time do I need to spend on training? We will teach you how to incorporate training into your everyday life. We ask that you spend an additional 15-30 minutes a day on focused training. Extending the amount of time as your pet learns new commands. You may consider practicing more than once a day by breaking up the time into 10- 15 minute sessions throughout the day. Why is there an age minimum for group classes? The K-9 Manners program includes dogs and puppies 11 weeks and older. Puppies should be no younger than 11 weeks and must have had two sets of vaccinations. This is due to a number of contageous diseases that are currently affecting pets in the Houston area. Check with your vet for any concerns prior to enrolling. Proof of vaccinations required. Is there a maximum age for any of the classes? As long as your dog is in good health, there isn't any reason an old dog can't learn new tricks. In fact, many times the older dogs do quite well because they are more self-confident. For this reason there is no age maximum for the K-9 Manners or CGC classes. Can my dog return to classes in the future? Absolutely! If you feel your dog needs to brush up on his/her basic skills in the future, you may enroll in a future class at no charge although there are restrictions. (Please call regarding refresher classes). What areas of town do you provide Private Lessons? Currently, we provide private lessons in far Northwest Harris County (ex. Tomball, Spring, Champions, Cypress) and Southwest Montgomery County (The Woodlands, Decker Prairie, Pinehurst, Magnolia). We may provide service to your area by requesting a trip charge. Please contact us for any questions concerning our service areas. Group lessons are located at a park in Tomball. Why do I have to show proof of vaccinations for my dog or puppy? There are several diseases for which all dogs should be protected against. Rabies is a disease that can be passed from animals to people and can be fatal to both. Because the dogs may come in contact with each other, we must make sure that every one of them is protected against the most dangerous, but preventable canine diseases -- Distemper, Hepatitis, Para-influenza, Parvo (DHPP) and of course, Rabies. Please bring a copy of the records with you to the first class or mail with your payment. What if I have already taught my dog to sit or to lay down? That's great! Most people have begun to teach these commands before they come to class. However, most people taking the class say that their dog only sits for as long as the dog wants to, and then it gets up. We will teach your dog to stay until you release it. There are other dogs who can do all of the commands at home, but not in the presence of other people and other dogs. This is the very reason dog obedience instructors put their own dogs in classes! Sure, the dog can sit at home in the quiet kitchen....but can he sit and stay at the vet's office or the park? Not unless you practice these commands around distractions! The other great thing about being in class is that you will get to meet other people who have the same objectives for their dogs as you do for yours. Everyone will all working toward the same goals...and you will all get to practice with each other as "controlled" distractions. What if my female dog comes into heat while we're enrolled in class? Females in heat will get the attention of every dog in class - male and female. Generally, all dogs behave very differently around females in heat and will be extremely distracted by her. Moreover, females in heat can leave scents behind that will distract dogs for many days forward. We ask that you leave dogs in heat at home. Under these circumstances, we'd be happy to reschedule you for the next group class or discuss private lessons at your home. Should I have my pet neutered/spayed?YES! Spaying and neutering decreases the overpopulation of pets. Hundreds of thousands of dogs are euthanized each year due to the lack of available homes. There are more animals in shelters than ever before. Spay or neuter surgery carries a one-time cost that is relatively small when one considers its benefits. It's a small price to pay for the health of your pet and the prevention of more unwanted animals. There are several facilities that provide low cost spay/neuter clinics in the Houston area. Visit our Links page to view a few of them. To learn more about spaying and neutering your pet, visit the Humane Society.
